It is quite apparent that you can no longer travel without a
cell phone. I have to say the ease
of contacting home is a bit off putting. I miss the travel days not so long ago when it was
impossible to get in touch with family at home or at the very least a struggle
to check in.
Off to Osu District to get my Ghanaian Burner phone. Step 1: get a phone…. That was easy;
just popped into the first cell shop I found and bought the cheapest phone (45
Cedi). Step 2: Go to
MTN just past the KFC on Oxford street (main drag and expat hangout in Accra)
and get a sim card (1 Cedi) and register it (don’t for get a copy of your
passport for this as I did….will have to come back tomorrow to finish the deal)
Step 3: buy minutes via scratch card.
You can get more minutes anywhere.
Minutes vendors are on every corner.
After all that I wandered around the Osu area for a while
and got some tasty pastries at Frankie’s.
Before leaving the area I found a nice pharmacy and bought
malaria tester kit and some medication if/when I test positive. Millions of people die every year from
Malaria and I just spent 40 Cedi (less than $20) for three tester kits and two
rounds of medication. That’s one
to think about.
